PERTH LIVER SCAN

PERTH LIVER SCAN

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

A FibroScan® may be beneficial for anyone who wishes to better understand their liver health, particularly those with risk factors for liver disease.

You may benefit from a FibroScan® if you:

  • Have been told you have fatty liver disease

  • Have abnormal liver blood tests

  • Are overweight or obese

  • Have type 2 diabetes or metabolic syndrome

  • Have high cholesterol or high triglycerides

  • Drink alcohol regularly

  • Have viral hepatitis (Hepatitis B or C)

  • Have a family history of liver disease

  • Wish to monitor previously diagnosed liver disease

  • Want to track the impact of lifestyle changes on your liver health

Many liver conditions cause few or no symptoms in their early stages. FibroScan® provides a quick, non-invasive way to assess liver fat and scarring before significant liver damage develops.

No referral is required.

You are welcome to book a FibroScan® assessment directly with Perth Liver Scan without a referral from your GP or specialist. The price is the same.

However, if your doctor has recommended a FibroScan®, we encourage you to bring your referral form.

The procedure is simple, painless, and non-invasive.

You will be asked to lie comfortably on an examination bed with your right arm positioned above your head. A trained operator will place a small probe against the skin over your liver and take a series of measurements.

You may feel a gentle tapping sensation during the scan, but there are no needles, injections, or sedation required.

Most patients find the procedure quick, comfortable, and pain-free.

No. Although both tests use ultrasound technology, they provide different information.

A liver ultrasound is primarily used to assess the structure of the liver and surrounding organs. It can help identify abnormalities such as liver masses, gallstones, or other structural changes.

FibroScan® is specifically designed to measure liver fat (steatosis) and liver stiffness (fibrosis/scarring). It provides a more accurate assessment of liver damage and is commonly used to help stage and monitor chronic liver disease.

Many patients may require both tests, depending on their individual circumstances.

No. FibroScan® assessments are currently not covered by Medicare, and no Medicare rebate is available.

To ensure accurate results, please:

  1. Fast for 3 hours before your appointment (water is permitted)

  2. Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the right side of your upper abdomen

  3. Bring your referral form (if applicable)
