Understanding your Results

The body composition analyser is a set of scales that uses Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) to determine multiple measurements relating to body composition.  The machine has 4 small electrodes built into its base which patients stand on.  The electrodes send an extremely small, safe and unnoticeable electric current through the patient's body.  BIA then measures a patient's impedance (resistance) to the electric current as it travels through the water found in fat and muscle of the body.  Electrical signals travel faster through water (muscle contains more water than fat), hence, the greater amount of muscle a patient has, the easier it is for a current to travel through the body.  Alternatively, the greater the fat content, the greater the impedance (resistance).  This measurement allow the machine to accurately estimate multiple components constituting body composition.  This machine has been clinically proven to provide highly repeatable results that are both reliable and accurate.

Although the electrical signal produced by the foot electrodes is painless and undetectable, metal within a person's body may interfere with the results of the analysis.  This means that the reliability of the results will be lessened in patients who have any sort of metal in their body (such as titanium pins, rods, etc).  Despite this, the body composition analyser is safe for all.
